THE WORLD CHOOSES KERRY

seriously. it's not even remotely close. what does this mean? this mean 49% of the american people just don't get what 72% of the rest of the world does.

i can't post more now. i'm just sick of even thinking about a bush re-selection. and i'm kinda late for work.

i'm sick of this president, and i approve this message.

house representative tim ryan of ohio is against the draft.

he spoke against the bill.

and he said everything that i wish kerry would have said every night of the debates.

watch ryan tear bush a new one

and john kerry is coming back to madison on thursday. sign up and print out tickets here. the foo fighters will be there, so i've heard. (unfortunately, the event starts at 10am on capital square, so i'll probably miss most of it. hopefully i'll catch the end, if it goes past 5... which is doubtful. dang.)

the future of life as i know it. maybe.

watching the office christmas special on bbc america while working on a writeup for pediatrics and worrying about all the reading i haven't done so far is the new ... um... well it's new.

today i met with the head of the pediatric clerkship, who is also head of pediatric hematology/oncology. we had a good talk about possible residency placement (boston, philly, seattle, oakland, baylor) and top peds hem/onc programs (boston, philly, seattle, oakland, memphis). i think i'd like to do my residency and fellowship in boston and philly, or vice versa, or in one or the other. both sound good right now. madison is getting stale at the moment. although, i've always wanted to end up at MSKCC in NYC.

we talked at length about life in peds hem/onc, the obvious ups and downs, how hard it is for her to have her work life and her family life, but at the same time how fulfilling it is and how she can't imagine doing anything else. i feel the same way. i mean, if tha 446 record deal never happens, that is.

but seriously though, the doc that heads up peds hem/onc is the bestest. she said i was invited to all future peds hem/onc conferences and events, and that she'd talk to her staff and find out some projects i can get involved with, in order to fatten up the ol' CV. she seemed more excited about all of this than i was! but i bet she wasn't. although she did say that i am now considered a "future colleague". wow. quite nice of her to say that.

amy's dawg is paaaaaassssed out on my couch. awww.

how do you love it, or do you really hate it? (with pictures)

do you love it

1. michael moore last night at the union terrace. it was cold, it was crowded. he was yelling, kinda resembled santa claus with his red badgers winter hat.

he was predictably interrupted by the college republicans who were chanting "four more years." after they were drowned out by chants of "two more weeks," he asked them to come forward and sign up for military service. then he called them pussies. for serious.

2. amy and i went to go see maria, full of grace friday night. great film. about the struggles of a colombian girl trying to make ends meet, taking on a job as a drug mule. this film doesn't attempt to patronize the audience, doesn't lecture or teach us a lesson. it's just very well done. and all in spanish. catalina sandino moreno, who plays maria, does an excellent job in the lead role.

3. the badgers played one of the more exciting football games i've watched in years, beating purdue, remaining undefeated (4-0 in the big ten!) and now tied (TIED!) for first in the conference with michigan! and we don't even play michigan this year!

the road to the rose bowl is wide open!

3.a. the packers are also winning right now, beating up all over the lions. sweet. now they won't be 1-5 or whatever their dismal record would be.

4. my people know what's up. how come the american people don't care? the mere fact that this presidential race is anything even approaching close illustrates that a large chunk of this populace gives two shits about, well, everything.

nearly 70% of koreans feel negatively towards bush, and they're split 70-20 in favor of a kerry versus a bush presidency. (let's not elect him in 2004 either)

or do you really hate it?

1. remember #2 on yesterday's list? "study"? yeah, didn't really get to that. better get to it today.

that's a picture of me studying.

2. tha 446 halloween show has been cancelled. the king club double-booked and we got the shaft. any of you madison residents have any ideas for a back up plan, leave a comment and let me know. damn. DAMN.

3. see #2. damn.

something to write home about

Dear Grandma and Grandpa,

How does it feel to feel? Pardon my freedom in the land of make believe. I'm so bored with the USA. Come on, let's go while we're young! Teach me how to fight. Tell me something, one very important thought. This is not America. This not a competition. This is not an exit. It's a fine line between the monkey and the robot - politics as usual. Everything's ruined and all you cna do is laugh. America, you fucked yourself. Well you needn't say something new just to break free from a hundred families. The Republican Army - it won't stop. I don't know what I can save you from.

But the world moves on, never be the same again. And here we test our powers of observation. Can it be all so simple? Possibly maybe... maybe not. Do you believe in magic?

Don't stop believing,

America's Most Blunted.

it's freezing in here, mr. bigglesworth

i took amy's dog out for a walk this morning and sweet lord my buns were freezing. in my early morning stupor (stupid), i went out in only a zippered hoody, jeans, and untied sneakers without socks. my super-permeable-to-the-elements outfit, paired with the 20mph winds whipping across brittingham park made for a thoroughly chilling walk.

i came back inside wide awake, but now i'm getting sleepy again. it's probably hypothermia.

and, just to keep everyone GLUED to the screen, here's my plan for the day:

1. post office. probably should go pretty soon. i think the u-square one closes at ten. i need to send back a hard drive which DOES NOT MOUNT. actually, it did mount the first time, long enough for me to copy a couple gigs of music over. then it never mounted again, and i was forced to bite the bullet and reformat. and of course it still won't mount after that. so, GOODBYE MUSIC, and HELLO 15% RESTOCKING FEE.

damn.

2. study. sucks when your girlfriend works the weekend that you have off. so i guess i'll "take advantage of the time" and "be efficient" and "study". study study study study study study.

3. lunch with amy? pending her work schedule.

4. watch the badgers try to go 6-0 today against purdue. more than likely this will take place while i am pretending to do #2. it may be cut short for #5.

5. michael moore at the terrace (really? it's going to be freezing. i bet.) tonight at 8:30pm. the plan's to get there by 7, to assure a good view amongst the faithful.

6. watch and re-watch the mpg clip (wmv file) of jon stewart calling out the crank yankers on crossfire, as well as the rest of the media. you can thank MBIMIBIMOTOMOOG for those choice links.

LET'S BURY SINCLAIR

so, i wrote emails to a bunch of madison advertisers on WMSN, the local sinclair affiliate, asking them to pull their advertising in efforts to take a stand against sinclair. i got the idea from this website, which has posted succesful advertising $$ withdrawals in minnesota and ohio, amongst other places.

here's the list of madison advertisers

talking points memo and daily kos has some good stuff on driving sinclair into the ground too. sinclair watch has been tracking their misdeeds for a while now. and al franken has a bunch of ideas and motivation, as well.

here's a link to sen. john mccain's letter to SBG, denouncing their decision to refuse the airing of the episode of "nightline" where ted koppel was reading off names of the fallen in iraq.

many of these links were found off of metafilter

and p.s. look at dubya's "official site"! HI-LARRY-US

09 October 2004

you will never get to take me with disposable parts

i haven't been going out a whole hell of a lot lately. for obvious reasons.

we went out the other night to see the f-ups, my girlfriend's sister's boyfriend's band. yeah, i know, i'm basically related to this guy. but i met the guy, travis, and i liked him. funny guy. nice guy though. i liked his band too. not really what i'd listen to these days. sorta reminded me of rancid forming an AC/DC cover band, trying to play ramones songs. i did feel like i was 17 again at that show though. there was a mosh pit. it was 4 girls. one was wearing sandals!

tonight enon and scout niblett and blackheart procession are playing at the high noon. since i haven't been to the high noon yet (shame on me), and i've never seen enon (not my fault), i think i will take advantage of the fact that i have this entire weekend off (why not).

in a few minutes, caitlin is coming over so amy can dye her hair. this should make for an interesting afternoon. maybe.

why isn't i heart huckabees playing in madison yet? iwannaseeit.

hillary rodham clinton rules

i got home late from call and missed the bulk of the debate. but i caught myself up (and you can too), by reading the highly literate, knowingly ironic, informingly anti-bush, and probably drunk blow-by-blow recap over at westwash.

i did catch bush saying that he couldn't think of anything he's done wrong in the past 3 years, except "some appointments, which he won't name by name", so as not to hurt their feelings. ANYBODY WHO BELIEVES THIS STATEMENT IS (stupid and) HEREBY UNQUALIFIED TO VOTE AND SHOULD IMMEDIATELY JOIN THE TROOPS IN IRAQ WHO ARE CURRENTLY BEING WELCOMED WITH OPEN ARMS (don't worry, it's only violent over there because there's an election coming up)

can i express my frustration with my country any more? it's bad enough that we have a shithead for a president leading a shithead administration into a shitstorm -- does it really need to compounded by the fact that SO MANY PEOPLE ARE BUYING INTO IT?

although i am going to stay up late and watch the replay of the debate on CNN at midnight, if only to hear bush say "internets." and also to boo and hiss and throw things at the television everytime his ugly mug rears its ugly mug-self. he's such a dirty liar. he's so dirty he gave my tv gonorrhea. wtf wmd

the newest reports from iraq say that not only were there no WMDs since the gulf war (which everyone knows by now, but our esteemed administration chooses to ignore), but that saddam's ability to re-assemble his nuclear program has steadily been weakened by 12 years of UN sanctions.

what does that mean?

that means that besides not having any WMDs, he didn't even have the CAPABILITY to make new ones. sounds like a grave threat, right?

according to Dumbya, that's exactly what saddam WANTED you to think! he was just letting his program go weak so the world would think he was complying, and then he was just going to start it back up again when we're not looking! because he retained the knowledge, means and intent. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? so he never forgot how to make them and he wanted to make them? THAT's our reason? no wonder God has been punishing our country with hurricanes and volcanos. pretty soon tornadoes will rip through the heartland and earthquakes will rattle the west coast. just wait. SHOCK! AWE!

this reminds me of when we were told that the violence in iraq was due to the upcoming handover of power. and now the violence is due to the upcoming elections. gee, i wonder what the violence will be due to after the elections? certainly not the transforming power of liberty.

kerry, you have a clear shot to dismantle georgy porgy tonight. fuck the moderates and the centrists, GO FOR THE JUGULAR. PLEASE.

ho hum

edwards, you really could have done better. honestly. i'm a bit disappointed.

cheney was way better than bush was. not that that's saying a whole lot.

the whole thing seemed like a bickering battle between who could cite the most unfavorable statistics about the other. and half the time neither candidate would even defend themselves.

now that is some weak sauce.

Rumsy was just "mistunderstood" when he said "no hard evidence," apparently

which makes sense, since "no hard evidence" is an easily misunderstood, misinterpreted, ambiguous phrase, that was taken out of context, and could very well mean "there certainly is hard evidence," or at best, "we believe that we have credible evidence." which means, if you trust him (and i pity you if you do), then you agree that maybe the evidence is true (which, by the track record of this administration, will later be clarified as "not true at all" or "we made it up" or "it's the CIA's fault" or "we said MAYBE").

RUMSFELD YOU'RE A DIRTY FLIP FLOPPER

as it is, this graphic makes me depressed. seeing wisconsin in red makes me embarassed and humiliated. but i believe that i may have credible evidence that the american people really aren't that dumb. at least not as dumb as our president king.

life on a pediatrics rotation, part III

yesterday i was on call for the first time on this rotation. during the outpatient portion, weekend call means spending the morning and good part of the afternoon at the urgent care clinic at university station. that was actually a lot of fun. it was well organized, patients trickled in at a steady rate, and i got to work up a lot of sick (but not acutely ill) kids. i saw a couple ear infections, some sort throats, a couple common colds, a finger sprain, and got peed on by a 4 day old baby. according to the resident, that's called "baptism" in pediatrics. oh. and i had the good fortune of wearing a white shirt as well. but it didn't show. or smell. i think.

after urgent care, you head back to the hospital and do rotations with the peds resident in the ER. when i arrived, they were finishing up with a kid who busted his shoulder while playing football with friends. there was one other patient (ring stuck on the finger) and then that was it. so i got sent home early. way early. i arrived at the ER at 3:30pm, they sent me home a little after 4. technically, we're supposed to stay until 8pm, but there were no patients.

the last part of weekend call is going in your post-call day to the newborn nursery at meriter. that's today. i have to leave in about 15 minutes to meet my attending there. should be interesting - these will be the youngest kids i've seen yet - most of them less than a day old. i better not get peed on.

i'm previewing the new elliott smith album and i like it so far. everything sounds extra depressing, for obvious reasons. i also heard the new le tigre album yesterday, and i rate it somewhere between "eh" and "whoa". oh and chuck, i got that bloc party ep, it's pretty FIT. and and and i found my old copy of rancid's "...and out come the wolves". that brought back some memories. OR SOME MAMMARIES!?? (rimshot) and i'm out.
