life on a pediatrics rotation, part III

yesterday i was on call for the first time on this rotation. during the outpatient portion, weekend call means spending the morning and good part of the afternoon at the urgent care clinic at university station. that was actually a lot of fun. it was well organized, patients trickled in at a steady rate, and i got to work up a lot of sick (but not acutely ill) kids. i saw a couple ear infections, some sort throats, a couple common colds, a finger sprain, and got peed on by a 4 day old baby. according to the resident, that's called "baptism" in pediatrics. oh. and i had the good fortune of wearing a white shirt as well. but it didn't show. or smell. i think.

after urgent care, you head back to the hospital and do rotations with the peds resident in the ER. when i arrived, they were finishing up with a kid who busted his shoulder while playing football with friends. there was one other patient (ring stuck on the finger) and then that was it. so i got sent home early. way early. i arrived at the ER at 3:30pm, they sent me home a little after 4. technically, we're supposed to stay until 8pm, but there were no patients.

the last part of weekend call is going in your post-call day to the newborn nursery at meriter. that's today. i have to leave in about 15 minutes to meet my attending there. should be interesting - these will be the youngest kids i've seen yet - most of them less than a day old. i better not get peed on.

i'm previewing the new elliott smith album and i like it so far. everything sounds extra depressing, for obvious reasons. i also heard the new le tigre album yesterday, and i rate it somewhere between "eh" and "whoa". oh and chuck, i got that bloc party ep, it's pretty FIT. and and and i found my old copy of rancid's "...and out come the wolves". that brought back some memories. OR SOME MAMMARIES!?? (rimshot) and i'm out.

Oh baby, two things...

1) Can I pee on you next time? I just have a mental image of you holding a 6'4" 25 year old like a baby( meaning by the arm pits). with no bottom on, and peeing on you.

2) Bloc Party='s lots of potential to be an awesome band....though so far that song Banquet is still the best one in my opinion.
